Movie My Little Pony: The Movie (Part 1) Released:
June 20, 1986
Snow covers the ground of this mystery land (probably Ponyville) and birds are flying around, helping those getting covered with snow. We get the opening title screen that indicates this is the first ever My Little Pony movie (and animated production as indicated in the TV series). The birds find a rabbit hole and (based on their chirping) signal the start of spring, giving a rabbit all they need to come out. They move to a snoozing skunk but agree not to wake it up and instead summon a raccoon, which in turn helps free the birds of snow.
The landscape reveals less snow further up and animals gather to a pink castle, whose drawbridge door opens up and cues not only a lineup of ponies but what would become the signature theme to this generation of MLP. As the theme song plays, we see indications that a Spring Festival is taking place, and various events it will have. As some ponies play, the song cuts out as one pony appears from behind a curtain as a familiar dragon plays an equally familiar tune on piano.
The pony shows off some of her moves but the dragon doesn't approve as he fears the show will get messed up, revealing the pony to be Lickety Split. Regardless, Lickety Split isn't interested in playing by the rules and figures one day she will be a star. Spike hopes that happens but reminds her to keep the trick out of the show. With that, Lickety Split wants the song played once more and reveals the dragon to be Spike as the theme song from earlier finishes.
A chipmonk nails a bulls-eye on a balloon before we see a volcano and a change in music, indicating possible danger. Inside a house of some sort rests high above and two girls are snickering over the tale of Little Red Riding Hood but aren't agreeing on whom to turn the next page as one of them is eating. A third member peers into her her couldrin to see the Spring Festival preparations and summons her girls upstairs to her, revealing them as Reeka and Draggle.
The leader (as I'll call her until her name comes up) shows them what's giving her a sickening feeling and even one of the girls doesn't like the pie but the other girl can't see and shoves the larger girl out of the way, initiating a fight between them that isn't loud enough to break the leader's concentration until they bump into her. She orders them to stop fighting but it takes two tries to successfully end it but the skinny girl reveals not only the name the leader doesn't like being called but her true name of Hydia.
Hydia wants her girls to actually get out and do something bigger than anything they've done before and takes them outside, where the skinny girl nearly falls into the lava pit and just manages to get back onto solid ground. Hydia leads them down a flight of stairs, and breaks into the first song of the movie by ranting at how they aren't evil enough. As the song progresses, the group are revealed to be witches and we're shown other members of their family that have done more evil deeds. When the song is done, the two girls are instructed to ruin the Spring Festval and are sent cascading down another flight of stairs.
Meanwhile, the show is about to start and the animals and ponies gather and a pony named Buttons gives a brief introduction before the baby ponies appear and begin their dance routine. All seems well as the ponies line up as rehearsed except Lickety Split trails behind in a different outfit that surprises Buttons and Spike. Worse still, she doesn't perform as rehersed and ruins the show, leaving the animal audience rolling on the grass with laughter.
Having seen enough, Buttons gets the curtain brought down before scolding Lickety Split on her actions and her outfit. Lickety Split's apology only leads to additional insults, leaving her to bolt from the show in tears. What they've done is starting to set in so Spike darts after her with the animals. Try as they might, Spike and the animals are unable to even slow Lickety Split down as she uses her feelings to break into song. She proves to be too quick and Spike ends up in the river before the animals help out. Lickety Split races into her house and starts packing.
Spike and the animals continue trying to stop her, even as Spike makes the song a duet but Lickety Split remains convinced that she's unable to please anyone and will run away. Realizing they aren't going to stop her, the animals help pack before she and Spike finish their duet. Spike wants to go with Lickety Split but she prompty tosses him aside, confident she's fine on her own. Regardless, Spike decides to tag along but not before leaving a note to say what's happened.
Meanwhile, Reeka and Draggle have arrived and peer from behind a tree unable to figure out how to wreck the festival as Hydia wants. After looking up what dank means, they decide to use the waterfall's water to drench the area but the skinny one doesn't have the right idea. The other girl brings out the book they had earlier to cast a spell but the skinny one has no experience casting spells and ends up reading the book upside down.
The spell is read correctly and eventually a stream of water appears but two sea ponies use a seashell to redirect the water to the witches instead. As a result, the duo are pushed across the lawn and into the pie table, leaving them both to confirm their thoughts on the pies. The animals and ponies investigate the noise but aren't frightened and instead give them a remark they aren't expecting. They remove the pies and head off while somewhat agreeing to say they made the festival messy (which is true).
Meanwhile Lickety Split arrives at a waterfall and considers the cliff a good place to fly, even if she is an earth pony. However, as Spike grabs her tail, they find out how right Spike was and end up in the water below. Nevertheless, she's not going home to what is revealed as Dream Castle. Elsewhere, the ponies have found out Lickety Split and Spike are gone and race to find them, even if Gusty feels Shady is bad luck (and yes that's Nancy Cartwright, VA for Bart Simpson voicing Gusty). Shady is accepted in the group and Gusty suggests seeing the Bushwoolies since Lickety Split loves them. With that, they head off.
Back at the Volcano of Gloom, Hydia takes her frustration out on the girls for having not delivered in return for what they now have. Reeka and Draggle shelter in a cauldrin but still bear the brunt of Hydia's anger before Hydia decides to come up with her own plan and decides on the Smooze, the same thing that wiped out a place called Grundle Land. However, making the Smooze requires a long list of thing and Hydia asks them to get it.
The duo read through the list but Phlume isn't one they'd prefer to get but Hydia hears none of it and boots them out of the house again. Back at the waterfall, Spike and Lickety Split are having no luck getting out but Reeka and Draggle are moving along when the skinny one overhears that her sister is getting sick and starts a song, revealing the larger girl as Reeka, assuring that she'll get everything and leave the phlume to Reeka.
However, Reeka doesn't like the idea and opts to be the one to get everything else so they decide to split up the list and get their half. By the time their song is over, they're in complete agreement.
