The ponies meanwhile have arrived at a desert and struggle to make it through the harsh conditions and lack of any civilization. In fact, Pinkie Pie has gone crazy and is talking to the skull of a long-since passed away animal. Finally, she collapses from exhaustion with the others following suit as Spike realizes that they really haven't seen anything of note for miles. Fortunately, Spike brings up the one thing they need, a road and the group eventually finds a town.
It's enough for them to get excited and head on in while two boars capture a parrot and plan on selling it to the highest bidder. When the ponies head in, they find it much less friendly as there's plenty of animals in cages while others are asking for things to buy. Nevertheless, Twilight finds another being with a barrel stacking problem and sorts it out with her magic, only to get a less-than-enjoyable response. The commotion has caught the attention of a cat nearby, whom was previously perhaps looking to make a purchase himself.
The ponies need to blend in and be cautious of who they talk to but Pinkie Pie isn't taking any of that advice, much to Twilight's dismay. With no takers for any of her suggestions, Pinkie Pie remains calm before Twilight urgently tells her what she's doing wrong. The town's inhabitants do have something they want after all and it's each of them or a piece of them but Rartiy thinks she's worth more, forgetting she has no idea about the town's currency.
The residents close in but the cat intervenes with the story of how each of the ponies has a form of disease called Coloritus. The residents scatter, not wanting any part of it and the cat introduces himself as Capper, whom Rarity shows affection for but Spike does not and Twilight is feeling uneasy. Pinkie Pie still wants to give Capper the benefit of the doubt and Capper sings a song about the very town they're in as well as being the very friend they need to get them through it. The group end up near a windmill and are taken up to a special room but Twilight remains still doubtful even when her friends are already accepting him.
Capper takes them up through a hole in the floor and reveals that the place is where he lives. The ponies look around and each find something at least interesting to look at. Outside, Storm King's henchmen as well as Tempest and Grubber are making their way through the same town and ask to find out where Twilight had gone. Unfortunately, the residents think it's a trick and one they're not going to fall for and conclude that Tempest and Grubber are friends of Capper and others. Tempest proves she's the stronger one and takes the fish down.
While the fish is threatened by Tempest, Capper isn't buying that a sonic rainboom is real and would prefer it not to be done in his house either way. Furthermore, Rarity patches up Capper's robe as a thank you for what he'd done for them and has no catch in mind. Twilight breaks the conversation with a map she found that indicates they need to find the queen of the Hippogriphs not the hippos and is pretty certain they can find them despite what Capper claims. They proceed to head out but a well-dressed pig is in their way and ready for selling.
The ponies are in shock that they were going to be sold to ammend his debt. Tempest appears to note that trusting strangers was a huge mistake and the pig targets her for a possible bargain but she promptly takes him out with her magic. The ponies seize the opportunity and head for the windmill outside and cling desperately to the blades. One of Storm King's henchmen finds the windmill and tries to stop it but with Rainbow Dash pushing the other way, the windmill breaks from its motor mount and hits the henchmen in the face a few times before the mount eventually fails completely, leaving the ponies in danger again.
The group manages to get off the half-broken windmill but still scramble to get away as it tears apart the foundation they're running on. They shoot for the docks as their only means of escape. The boat is seconds from taking off when Rainbow Dash intercepts and a few struggle across. Unfortunately Pinkie Pie doesn't make it before Rainbow Dash swings the rope away, leaving Twilight to try and catch her. Luckily, Twilight saves Pinkie Pie from a rocky peril and gets her on board but Pinkie Pie is all-too-thrilled about the supposed escape plan.
Once on board, they face a new danger as the ship's occupants are on the verge of finding them. When the occupants are unable to find them and walk away, Rarity doesn't like what she's heard. Back outside, Capper faces Tempest once again, this time to find out where Twilight and the others went. Capper struggles to come up with a good location but Tempest isn't falling for it and takes Capper prisoner on Storm King's ship. High above storm clouds on the ship they narrowly managed to avoid missing, the group get a glimpse of the occupants but Twilight fears that asking them for help may lead to a repeat of trusting Capper.
Luck isn't with them this time as the occupants find them and discuss what to do with them. With no direct agreement, they ask for advice from Captain Celano and his Storm King book. With the book telling them to throw Twilight and crew overboard, it's not looking good until the whistle sounds for lunch, leaving Twilight and others confused, even after she sees what the occupants eat. Turns out the occupants only get one lunch break a day and must follow Storm King's orders or suffer his wrath, leaving them unable to accept Twilight's request.
Rainbow Dash isn't so sure they were always like this and asks about it. The occupants reveal that they were once pirates before Storm King moved in. It's enough for Rainbow Dash to present the former pirate birds with a choice, let Storm King rule over them or be pirate birds again and breaks into song, much to Twilight's protest. Eventually, the others join in, prompting Twilight to walk away with the map. By the time the song wraps up,the ship's crew is back to the way it was before Storm King and is setting a new course.
Rainbow Dash decides to add a sonic rainboom as the finishing touch but while Pinkie Pie supports her, Twilight fears the very worst and sure enough, Grubber and Tempest spot the rainbow and realize who's behind it. Rainbow Dash and Captain Celano's sword fight is interrupted as Storm King's ship is approaching, prompting the pirate birds to send the ponies below deck. The pirate ship is impacted by a grappling hook from Storm King's ship, which is drawn ever closer to the side of the pirate ship.
Once on board the pirate ship, Tempest asks where Twilight is, using her status as princess but Captain Celano is unfamiliar with this property applied to Twilight and states they're just hauling Storm King merchandise. However, Tempest raises the danger by noting what'll happen if they're caught with other occupants on board not being thrown away. Down below, Twilight suggests they get off the ship before their location is spoiled but Rainbow Dash isn't willing to give up the hard work she did (despite giving away their exact location).
Twilight searches around and gets an idea while the pirates face the loss of their ship or the loss of the ponies they're stowing below.
