Episode 135 Buckball Season Aired:
September 3 2016
We find Applejack in Sweet Apple Acres eyeing an apple and checking the wind to see if her maneuver to hit the target is right. However, just as she's about to fire the apple home, Rainbow Dash interrupts her and causes her to mess up. Once Applejack explains her situation, Rainbow Dash is not happy at out their opposition is being so boastful but hasn't a clue what Buckball is. The game proves to be exciting enough for Rainbow Dash to share the info with Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy and claim to be an expert even though none of them knew what it was beforehand. They just have to prove they're better than Braeburn's team.
Only problem is, they don't have a unicorn or rest of a team but Applejack and Rainbow Dash decide to split Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy between them and then have unicorns try out to find the best fit. Several unicorns are brought in and caught up with the rules with a little demonstration. They get a practice game underway (and prove that you don't need both pegasai and unicorns to defend the goals given that the pegasai are already defending the goal). Pinkie and Fluttershy are showing their excitement and apparent bucking skills, which has Applejack and Rainbow Dash in total amazement and confusion.
Now it's time to see how the unicorns fair in the game but none of them even come close. Luckily, Snails is on his way with two buckets of water and manages to catch the incoming balls with no trouble at all. They invite Snails to join them with Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, leaving Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy confused as they'd anticipated Rainbow Dash and Applejack to play in the actual game. Nevertheless, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy agree to play more seriously but it's not with the game but with an obstacle course. Just the look of the course has Fluttershy fearful and it only gets worse with each section of the course Rainbow Dash succeeds in completing. While Fluttershy struggles to even complete the course, Pinkie Pie proves far better at scoring goals.
Once the pressure is put on them, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy start coming apart with their skills so Applejack ends their practice for the day. Pinkie Pie had thought they'd get better with practice but they just have to get their heads into the game before tomorrow. A little later, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy discuss the events but feel better knowing that it's unlikely anyone else even knows about the game, let alone that they have a team for it.
Unfortunately, when they arrive at the train station, the entire town is cheering them on and no longer have the confidence to play. Worse still, on the train, they find out that Rainbow Dash and Applejack were the ones that told the entire town and aren't interested in being a part of the zone Rainbow Dash implies. In fact, they come up to Applejack and Rainbow Dash but it's Fluttershy that explains their problem with rage before the duo run off crying.
It isn't long before Rainbow Dash and Applejack realize that that what's important to them isn't what made the game fun for Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy. After a search for them in the train, Rainbow Dash and Applejack reach the only car they haven't searched and find Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy cowering behind luggage. Fluttershy appologizes for letting them down but Rainbow Dash and Applejack are willing to take their places in the competition. All they request is that Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie play one more time for practice. The duo agree but it takes time for them to go back to how they were before.
Rainbow Dash and Applejack have had enough and realize that not everyone does well under pressure, which explains why Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy were doing so poorly earlier. Even Snails mentions how to deal with the pressure, not thinking about it. At the game, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy help get the score tied at 5 but have learned just how tough Braeburn's team really is. The next buckoff is upon them and after some back-and-forth passes, Pinikie Pie scores the winning goal. Braeburn admits it was a great game but plans to get more serious for the rematch, even if Pinkie Pie already knows that having fun is more important.
