Episode 122 Gauntlet of Fire Aired:
April 16 2016
We find Rarity and Spike in a bat cave gathering gems but Rarity's magic proves too bright for the sleeping bats and wakes them up. Worse still, Spike is glowing and has no control over it or its itchy symptoms as the bats fly past. At Twilight's castle, Luna and Celestia have joined Twilight but their out-of-the-ordinary day is shattered with an ordinary call for help, this time from Rarity over Spike's unsual situation. Spike has no idea what's going on but Luna and Celestia know it as the call of the Dragon Lord.
Spike has been called as he is needed in the Dragonlands. It brings bad memories of Garble (whom at the time wasn't named, only revealed later as the red dragon bullying Spike) but should Spike have to go, Rarity and Twilight are eager to go as Twilight can learn a lot about the dragon culture and of course be there for Spike. They'll need a different costume than their original dragon costume and arrive as a rock formation that Rarity isn't happy with. They have to blend in as the dragons have arrived. Garble makes himself known and still isn't friendly towards Spike, figuring the ponies gave him a pony name.
Worse still, Garble decides to sit on Spike's rock formation and claim it for himself. Their feud is interrupted as the Dragon Lord himself bellows into the air and is perched on the highest rock point nearby with an announcement. However, Spike has questions and Garble is willing to answer them before the Dragon Lord reveals that dragon laws are forcing him to step down and find a replacement by having each of them try to find the scepter he throws into the fiery volcano behind them.

Spike stops glowing but it's little comfort for the task ahead and Twilight is gathering much info while Rarity cannot hold back a sneeze. Spike takes the blame for the sneeze and it gets Garble off the rock formation. However, Spike has no desire to be Dragon Lord and he stopped glowing but the Dragon Lord isn't willing to let him sneak away. Princess Ember defends Spike by indicating his height to her's and his lack of desire to compete. Furthermore, Spike misunderstands a fact with Dragon Lord and Dragon Lord lets him leave.
Ember wants to compete but Dragon Lord doesn't consider her strong or large enough to compete and designed the competition and labyrinth for a big strong dragon to win and lead. Ember flies off, fuming that she isn't competing.  The dragons boast about what they'll do as leader but Garble's is worst of all and Twilight and Rarity fear for Equestria. It's clear to Spike that he must enter and win the Gauntlet of Fire to save Equestria. It's such a barbaric statement that Rarity and Twilight remove their costume to try and talk Spike out of it.
Spike is aware of what's going to happen should he win but there's no other way than to compete so Rarity and Twilight agree to stay and cheer him on. Spike joins the others on the cliff but Dragon Lord notes that all dragons are allowd to compete but at their own risk. With that, the Dragon Lord sends them off but Garble sends Spike into the river below. Spike gets going with Rarity and Twilight cheering him on under their seaweed costume. Things prove to be much tougher as eels jump up randomly blocking the dragons' path, proving to be too much for one masked dragon as they plummet towards the water.
The mystery dragon hits the water and sinks, leaving Spike to save them and bring them to shore, where he learns it's Princess Ember, whom isn't all that greatful to be rescued at all. Furthermore, she unveils Twilight and Rarity through the seaweed but isn't bothered by them as long as they don't get in her way. She's going to prove that she can do it without meeting Dragon Lord's criteria, even though Dragon Lord denied her into the tournament. Garble gets pinned down by a giant boulder from above and tries to play victim. After Twilight and Rarity rebuild their costume, Spike saves Garble but it's what Garble predicted would happen.
As a result, Garble gives no thanks and considers Spike too soft thanks to the ponies, which he senses are nearby and goes on a hunt. Ember covers for them by saying she brought the scent from hunting ponies earlier and Spike manages to convince Garble that Ember is related to him. Garble has wasted enough time and heads off but not without making another joke about Spike's height. Ember removes her mask and asks why Spike covered for her but Spike did that because Ember covered for Rarity and Twilight. With the next challenge looking rough, Spike suggests they work together but Ember is suspicious.

Twilight and Rarity, whom have made a tree costume, have doubts it'll work out but Spike notes what he's witnessed Ember do and Twilight agrees that it goes against their current knowledge of dragon culture. After some consideration, Ember agrees but they aren't going to take part in any pony-related activities. They take to the skies and manage to arrive at a cave where Twilight and Rarity are waiting for them. However, Garble and a few others get there first and find there's a fiery threat wating inside.
Ember wants to continue working with Spike as she wouldn't have made it without him, but only until they get to the end of the tunnel. Spike agrees and off they go with Twilight and Rarity not far behind. They join a few others but are the only ones to make it through, until Garble manages to force his way through. Spike and Ember pass through the series of deadly crystals while Garble takes a direct hit and is temporarily disabled.
They reach the end of the tunnel where molten lava steps await but it's a relief for Twilight and Rarity, whom are now separate rocky formations. Rarity loses her balance from the rumbling and Spike just manages to save her, a feat that impresses Ember. However, now that they're through the tunnel, their partnership is over and it's every dragon for themselves, making Spike sad. With that, Ember heads off, leaving Spike to be upset that he'd lost a new friend, confident that Ember isn't like the other dragons.
It's clear to Spike that they're friends but the three of them seem a bit lost as Twilight feels they'd past the opening three times already. Luckily Spike spots one they haven't gone through and head inside. They're first until Garble arrives and is ready to take it out on Spike to ensure that Spike doesn't obtain the scepter. However, Ember takes him out, then saves Spike from the jagged spikes below as that's what friends do, and they're friends. Unfortunately, her efforts also exposed Twilight and Rarity's identities as ponies and Garble backs them to the edge of the cliff. Ember once again intercepts while Spike goes after the scepter.
Garble won't give in, even after Ember restrains him so Spike goes to help and is nearly thrown off the edge of the narrow path. Garble is sick of Ember helping Spike and vice-versa but Ember notes that she and Spike do and throws Garble to the ground, much to Twilight an Raritys' delight. Other dragons are approaching but Spike gets the scepter and gets it activated before finally being acknowledged as Dragon Lord Spike, much to Garble's disgust. Furthermore, Spike starts his reign by making the remaining dragons walk home and giving every dragon they meet a hug without a reason why.
With that, the other dragons head off but Garble isn't happy about it. Meanwhile, Spike hands over the scepter to Ember as the Dragon Lord is the one that hands the scepter to their father and feels Ember would make a great Dragon Lord. Ember isn't so confident about it and has to learn what a hug is with Twilight and Rarity looking on. They arrive back but Dragon Lord isn't thrilled to find Ember with the scepter, having told her not to compete but Ember stands up to him to note that she's proven to win without being a big, strong dragon. The Dragon Lord admits he was wrong and says she'll make a great leader.
Ember kids around a bit before the Dragon Lord makes the new leader official and gets cheers of approval. Meanwhile, Twilight commends Spike on his hard work, and will now be in contact with Ember whenever she needs new information. She'll possibly be able to write a whole book on dragons with the info they've gathered. Rarity now has additional ideas for clothing and the group have a good laugh about it.
