Episode 30 Luna Eclipsed Aired:
October 22 2011
At home, Spike paces near the stairs, then orders Twilight to hurry up or they'll miss the Nightmare Night Festival. When Twilight comes down, she's asked about her costume and explains that she's Star Swirl the Bearded (in Spike's defense, I have no idea who that is). Before Spike can answer his question from Twilight about reading the book she gave him, there's a knock at the door. At the door, Spike finds little trick-or-treaters and by the time Twilight comes over, giving Granny Smith a warm Nightmare Night greeting but all Granny Smith gives back is a complaint about not being asleep five hours ago. Each of the treaters gets their piece of candy before Pipsqueak, a filly, makes his introduction and explains that it's his first Nightmare Night ever. Next to barge through is Pinkie Pie in a chicken costume, rudely demanding candy quickly.
Twilight questions Pinkie Pie being too old for this event but is told that she's never too old (which begs the question of how old Twilight and crew really are). Pinkie Pie gets her treat and after remarking on Twilight's costume, devours all that's left in the candy bowl before scurrying off. Twilight rants on the costume's design (how DOES a pony stitch? Sure we saw it in "Suited for Success" but that still doesn't exactly answer the question because Rarity can use magic) and Spike only makes Twilight more fumed with his comment.
At the festival, while Big Macintosh passes by with a hay ride, Twilight goes through a brief history lesson about the being behind her costume and figures everyone would love a group about it with Spike's agreement as he munches on candy before bumping into Twilight and leaving his entire load of candy on the ground (where possible). Pinkie Pie shows how much candy she and her friends got before Rainbow Dash (ironically) dressed as a Shadowbolt gives her a jolt of lightning from the cloud above and Spike ends up choking on candy as a result, forcing Twilight to carry him. The duo find Applejack in front of the table for bobbing for apples, which she suggests but the event is quickly rendered inoperable as Derpy literally pulls the plug on it.
The crowd gathers as the mayor announces Zecora's arrival from behind the curtain to tell about the legend of Nightmare Moon. Spike makes a comment about it being more effective if she wasn't dressed like that (Spike's got a point there). Zecora begins the tale (that appears to differ from the one told by Celestia in episode 1, which either means it's kind of a side-story or Zecora really doesn't know the story at all), scaring the youngsters and Pinkie Pie in the process. Out of fear from the story, Pinkie Pie dumps her candy by the Nightmare Moon statue but before they leave, a dark figure in a carriage emerges from the clouds and only Twilight seems to recognize that it's Princess Luna, whom despite her calming words, is speaking in a manner that frightens everyone around her (can't blame them there, it's not exactly calming at all).

Twilight decides to talk to her, figuring she's having trouble adjusting. She arrives at Luna's location and learns that the voice Luna is using is part of tradition and that Luna knows both who Twilight is pretending to be and really is. She takes Luna to Fluttershy's house, assuring that Fluttershy gives good pointers. Fluttershy is obviously not fond of Nightmare Night and Twilight has to mention that it's Luna for the door to be opened but upon seeing whom she thinks is Nightmare Moon, she darts back inside and Twilight has to constantly pull her out. Luna gets down to a more tolerable voice but gets the wrong message from Pinkie Pie and her group when they see Fluttershy practically out cold in Luna's hooves and run away. Twilight initiates Plan B where they re-enter the festival grounds with others cowering in fear from Luna's presence.
Luna is shown different activities and after success from the 2nd one, she requests to be called Luna, which calms nearby ponies until Pinkie Pie and her group arrive to see Pipsqueak being hoisted in the air by Luna's mouth and dart off once more. Luna lets her more fearsome side slip out again and tries to show them fun but it only makes things worse. Luna then decrees Nightmare Night shall be cancelled forever. A little later, Twilight decides to lecture Luna but it doesn't work and uses Pinkie Pie as bait by attracting her with candy. She tells Pinkie Pie to remain quiet and Luna almost becomes friends with Pinkie Pie before Rainbow Dash pulls her prank and Pinkie Pie runs off before Twilight pins her down.
Pinkie Pie explains that sometimes it's fun to be scared and tells Luna all about it along the way. Meanwhile, Pipsqueak hadn't imagined his first Nightmare Night would become his last and neither him nor any nearby fillies get much confidence. At the NM statue, they put down their candy and Luna arrives disguised as Nightmare Moon but doesn't think the plan worked as Twilight said. Pipsqueak comes back, requesting Luna to come back next year, despite the supposed cancellation of the event. He is told that they may have to bring the event back and runs over to tell the news. As ponies take part in what's left of Nightmare Night, Twilight recites her letter to Celestia. Rainbow Dash tries her prank again but is scared by Luna herself and they all have a good laugh.
