Episode 55 Spike's Search Aired:
September 11, 1987
We find Spike and several ponies playing volleyball and Spike gets the ball back into play when it goes over as Megan and a few others look on. However, as the ball goes over again, Spike sneezes fire and Lofty ends up in the crossfire. Spike hopes it doesn't happen again but he's getting to be a big dragon and the flames may be a sign he's growing up, which isn't something Spike is thrilled about and sneezes more fire. What Spike needs is experience and no book can help him with that but Danny whom catches up warns that a quest could be dangerous. Danny accepts and decides to go along.
Their search leads them up a narrow path on a cliff when a baby eagle ends up falling over the edge right into Danny's arms. The eagle learns who the two of them are and explains that it'd been trying to find its parents for a long time without success. Spike knows how the baby eagle feels and joins the eagle in his song. They gain more confidence by the the time their song is done and after learning the baby eagle's name is Weston, Spike suggests taking him back to Paradise Estate once they help find dragons.
Danny and Weston accept the idea and find a smoke trail above a grove of trees. By nightfall, they find the source is indeed of a group of dragons around a campfire. In spite of first impressions, Spike wants to talk to them alone. He does so and is met with mostly negative response, though one dragon notes that they have criteria that must be met and are off to deal with a town's slow response to their demands. The dragons arrive at the town and Spike decides to tag along but the dragons spread fire and destruction throughout the town.
Townspeople flee, allowing the dragons to pick up the food left behind. However, they pass by Danny and Weston whom are watching from the bushes and rush to Paradise Estate to let the others know of the event. They do and Locket flies off to see for herself while Spike notes that the dragons may have more fun if they see the ponies. The dragons play along but are secretly planning something else as they're taken right to where the ponies live. Locket recieves the information and relays it back to the others.
As a result, they decide to prepare a special welcome and when the dragons arrive, they're taken by surprise to find out the others knew. Nevertheless, they eat the food and demand more or threaten to cause trouble. When the dragons continue eating and ignore Spike's orders, Danny unleashes a wall of water that knocks all three dragons off their feet and into a pile. It's enough for them to leave but they just wanted to have a little fun, even if Spike wanted to learn how to be a dragon. Weston is feeling like something is missing but Megan finds Weston's parents flying overhead and Weston races to them.
Spike figures he won't be a dragon now but Danny notes that since different kinds of ponies exist, there must be different kinds of dragons too. Until then, Spike figures he'll remain here but did learn how to cook marshmellows from the dragons and the duo have a good laugh about it.
