Episode 21 | Over a Barrel | Aired: March 25 2011 |
On board a train (which I might add is horse-driven)
Applejack is reading a bedtime story to of all things an apple tree,
leaving Rarity puzzled, especially that Applejack named the tree, then
upset that she doesn't have a sleeping car. Applejack explains that the
whole reason for the trip is to give the tree to his relatives in
Apple-Loosa (if I'm spelling that right). After seeing Applejack "calm
down" the tree, Rarity storms off, protesting that she's the sad one.
Later that night, Rarity and Spike are trying to get some sleep when the
noise of the others irritates Spike enough to remind them that they're
trying to sleep and after overcooking the rest of Rainbow Dash's
popcorn, heads back to sleep. Twilight Sparkle suggests they all get some sleep and shuts off the lights to the disappointment of a few. Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie can't sleep and at first discuss the possibility of moving the tree from the train to to the orchard upon arrival in Apple-Loosa but the conversation changes when Pinkie Pie asks if RD is referring to Applejack's tree and RD sarcastically says she meant Fluttershy. Pinkie Pie takes the comment seriously and the ruckus awakens Twilight, whom is puzzled about what Rainbow Dash said. Fluttershy awakens, saying she'd like to be a tree but Spike can't take it anymore and heads to another part of the train. Fluttershy and the others awake quietly giggle over their Puff the Magic Dragon reference joke. Rarity yells at them to sleep and Twilight quickly blows out the lantern/candle. Spike meanwhile joins Applejack's tree Bloomburg and sleeps. As the sun rises, the ponies awaken to a herd of stampeding buffalo that ram the train and its conductors. Rattled from the impacts, the ponies return to the window to watch a sort of pony hybrid leap up onto the train. RD figures this isn't a circus act and tries multiple times to talk to the pony hybrid but to no avail as the caboose is uncoupled and RD plows into the railroad sign and the buffalo push the caboose with Spike inside down the track in the opposite direction. RD gets off the sign but the pain from her run-in with the railroad sign stops her. The rest of the train stops in Apple-Loosa and we are greeted to Braeberg (I've read this is the spelling or what I remember is the spelling), whom scolds Applejack for not introducing her friends and for the train being 7 minutes late. Braeberg shows them the town literally by force as he shoves them to each part of the town. It takes Applejack several times to get Braeberg's attention but she succeeds and the group learns of an issue the town has had with the buffalo. Meanwhile, RD is sneaking around, determined to get the pony/being responsible but Pinkie Pie scares her and their ruckus gets them surrounded by buffalo, whom start to charge but Spike stops them and says they're no threat so the buffalo leave. That night, the ponies eat, at least Pinkie Pie does and she thinks RD is crazy to leave before finishing their dinner. Spike explains that the buffalo respect dragons like him and that the pony hybrid they saw earlier is Little Strongheart but the mere sight of her convinces RD to leave and she starts dragging Pinkie Pie away but LS explains and brings in Chief Thunderhooves, the main buffalo to help. RD agrees to help talk to the Apple-Loosians. Elsewhere, Applejack adjusts Rarity's accessory and explains they need to be ready for their journey through buffalo territory if they want to save their friends, which they run into shortly after starting and meet the new friends PP and RD found and then a quarrel starts as to who gets the land. Twilight stops the argument but has no idea what to do so PP shares hers and it's a song about caring and sharing. When the performance is done, only Spike is clapping while Twilight facehoofs in embarrassment. Chief Thunderhooves announces that their stampede will take place tomorrow at noon and they'll flatten the town if it's still standing. They go their separate ways before Braeberg can get a word. Try as they might, Twilight and her friends cannot get a word to any of the workers. That night, the buffalo make their preparations as well by sharpening and locking horns. Unless the trees are removed, LS figures there's no way to stop the confrontation so Spike munches sadly on more gems. RD tries to reason with CT, whom warns that at at noon, it'll be too late. The next day, just minutes before noon, the buffalo arrive just outside Apple-Loosa. RD fails to get an idea as the clock strikes noon but just when it looks like the stampede is stopped, Pinkie Pie sings her song again and the stampede goes as planned but so does the battle from Apple-Loosians. Uh-oh! If the stampede started at noon as shown at 18:16 into the episode, why does the clock later say 10 and it's NOT night time at 18:56 into the episode? The battle takes a turn for the worst, at least for the buffalo when Chief Thunderhooves charges and is hit with a pie, leaving him motionless on the ground but is rejuvenated when the pie lands in his mouth and gives him an idea to split up the orchard down the middle so the buffalo can run through, which they gladly do and as they lave with Little Strongheart, Twilight recites her letter to Celestia, which gets a brief protest from Pinkie Pie about using her lines. |
